Terms, in plain language

The vocabulary that turns up in our announcements, defined for a general audience. Deeper technical detail is in the documentation.

Multi-party computation (MPC)
A cryptographic method that lets several parties compute a shared result while each keeps its own input private. No participant sees what the others contributed, and no central party holds all of it.
Zero-knowledge proof
A proof that a statement is true which reveals nothing beyond that fact. It can establish that someone is over 18 without disclosing a date of birth.
Verifiable credential
A digitally signed statement about a person or organisation, issued by one party and checkable by another without contacting the issuer. The W3C standard behind digital IDs, diplomas, and licences.
EU Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI)
The smartphone wallet every EU member state must make available to citizens under eIDAS 2.0, holding government-issued identity alongside other credentials.
eIDAS 2.0
The EU regulation on electronic identification and trust services, in force since 2024, which mandates the Digital Identity Wallet.
Decentralised identity
A model where people hold their own credentials and present them directly, instead of every service storing its own copy of their personal data.
